Mission

The purpose of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is to assist in the development of a safe and healthful environment on the campus of UCO in support of the pursuit of excellence in education.

Duties:

  • To function as UCO's internal consultants for safety, environment, providing guidance, suggestions and direction in solving safety and environmental problems that develop in any area of the University, either in support and staff functions or in academic areas.

  • To manage Workers' Compensation claims for UCO employees that are injured while on the job.

  • To ensure the safety of the UCO community through Risk Management.  This includes risk to students and visitors, as well as the university's property and financial assets.

  • To manage the internal structure for safety inspection of facilities and grounds.

  • To develop reports and recommendations on potential problem areas and to provide recommendations for resolution.

  • To monitor the Life Safety inspections conducted by UCO's Fire Alarm Contractor, including monthly and annual inspections and maintenance of all fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and kitchen fire suppression systems.

  • To work closely with UCO's Fire Alarm Contractor and other professional services to keep UCO in compliance.

  • To schedule and conduct training for faculty, staff and student employees.

  • Additionally, EHS is the lead contact with the State Fire Marshal's Office, the Oklahoma Department of Labor, the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and other state and federal agencies involved in compliance efforts.

  • Members of the EHS team are trained to handle hazardous chemicals and asbestos.

 

Reporting an Injury

Students:

For medical emergencies, life threatening injuries, or chemical exposures contact DPS at (405) 974-2345.  DPS will arrange for transport to the appropriate emergency medical facility.  For treatment of non-life threatening injuries proceed to the Student Health Center located in the Wellness Center during their hours of operation

Visitors:

If a visitor is injured, please contact DPS immediately at (405) 974-2345 or via 9-1-1.  They will notify the UCO Risk Management office after necessary medical attention has been rendered.

Employees:

For life threatenting injuries, seious chemical exposures, or needlesticks please notify DPS at (405) 974-2345.  They will initiate proper notifications and arrange for emergency transport to the appropriate emergency medical facility.

For non-life threatening injuries, please contact the Workers' Compensation office at (405) 974-5994.  The Work Comp office will give you instructions concerning treatment for your injury.  Without first reporting the injury and seeking medical attention through UCO's work comp office, you could have out of pocket expenses or have further treatment delayed.
