Michael Chertoff, Homeland Security Secretary"We cannot protect every single person at every moment in every single place. We cannot look in every container and every box. What we can do is use intelligent risk-based analysis, advanced technology and enhanced resources to manage that risk."

-- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff

BOSTON, MA – Seven people, including three students, were injured when a natural-gas explosion ripped through a Northeastern University dormitory yesterday, and authorities are investigating whether a KeySpan Energy crew replacing gas lines near the building triggered the detonation, officials said. The victims, who were not identified, were sent to area hospitals with injuries that included broken arms and legs, cuts, and burns, said emergency officials at the scene yesterday. The Disaster Resistant University Planning Grant Project at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is an effort to lessen the risks and improve the ability of UCO to withstand significant manmade or natural disasters, such as from tornadoes. The planning effort is in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, and coordination with the City of Edmond; funding is through a $100,000 grant. UCO needs your input for this plan to be successful and to develop mitigation efforts for future implementation.

When this plan is in place, UCO will be able to seek up to $3 million in federal funding for each disaster-mitigation project validated under the planning grant program. Projects might include construction of additional storm shelters or improving existing shelters in campus buildings.

The intent of this survey is not to collect personal or private information. With this data, UCO can better respond and prepare for future manmade and natural disasters.

Thank you for your input.
